SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH – WHAT PART OF D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R DO YOU NOT YET UNDERSTAND?

Just thinking about DISASTER PREPARATION takes time away from your full daily routine of raising children, making money,  taking a well deserved vacation. Time is your most valuable investment asset. A savings account or retirement pension won’t do any good for those who don’t survive a disaster. Time invested in preparation helps save lives.

You have 72 hours before you plunge into your full Fall schedule. Please take a few minutes of that time to put yourself in the shoes of a Hurricane Katrina victim. Do what you can to help and pray for them, but also think of your family, your neighbors and the heroic first responders who would be involved if there is a disaster here.

Ø       Do you always have at least a half a tank of gas in your car?

Ø       Do you have an up-to-date Grab ‘n Go bag for all family members and pets? With 3 days of food and water?

Ø       Have you filled out your emergency medical forms to help our paramedics?

Ø       Do you have a phone and email communication network in your neighborhood?

Ø       Have you marked every Monday night on your calendar to participate in the CM Neighborhood Safety and Preparedness Radio Training Net?

Ø       Do you have a buddy house? A family emergency response packet? CPR training? Or are you scheduled to come to a FREE Neighborhood Safety and Preparedness Course to get this information?

Ø       Are you alert to reach out to people in this community who need help and friendship just as much as some in the disaster area?

 Each one of us can make a difference for good and the result will ALWAYS be better if we did nothing.

 USING YOUR RADIO   We practice to learn how to use our radios, to find the best transmission places and to learn how to work with many people on the same radio band. At one point last week we had many people respond at the same time and no one could be heard. Listen just a moment to see if someone else is speaking or about to speak. Be patient and try again if Net Control cannot hear you. If you have more questions, call the number at the end of the newsletter.

NEW MESSAGE CENTER FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS, (714) 754-4897

We are grateful for city support that has enabled us to have a telephone number for Spanish speakers to call in and leave a number and have someone call them back and communicate in Spanish. This is the RSVP number shown above.

We are grateful for Mirna Burciaga, who is taking the lead on manning this new message line, and with several other very hard workers, is getting the NSP program materials translated into Spanish.

URGENT NEED FOR ENGLISH/SPANISH BILINGUAL VOLUNTEERS

Please share this with anyone who is bilingual and wants to make a difference in our city by bringing this program to their neighbors. They can respond by email or call the number at the end of this letter. We want to contact them soon so they can take the CERT training if possible.

LUANNE SENDS US A REMINDER ABOUT EMERGENCY PET CARE

There is one point here that is rarely discussed – the comfort of an owner’s smell.

This information below is from the Animal Assistance League of Orange County' newsletter.

Pet Disaster Preparedness

Hurricane Katrina reminds us all that we must plan for disasters. In California, we are faced with possible wildfires, earthquakes, mudslides, etc. In the event of an emergency or disaster Red Cross Shelters may not be able to accept your pets. It's not safe to leave your pets behind as they depend on you for their survival. Be sure you have a disaster plan ready for all members of your family, including the four legged ones.

* Be sure your pets are licensed and wearing current ID tags

* At least a week's supply of food and water for each pet

* Food and water dishes. Collapsible dishes are easiest to transport

* If your animal takes medication, have an emergency supply on

  hand and check expiration dates. Rotate medication as necessary.

* Have copies of medical reports stored in a waterproof container

  Include the name and address of your veterinarian.

* Sturdy leashes/harness for each pet.

* Pooper scooper, 1 week supply of cat litter and plastic bags for

  disposing of waste (shoe box size litter box is recommended)

* Carrier or crate for each animal

* First aid kit

* Disinfectant cleaner and paper towels

* An article of your clothing so they can have the comfort of your scent

* Toys and bedding

* Recent photographs of you with your pet -it will help you identify

  your pet if it gets lost
